 Exam Patterns and Syllabus for UPSC Exam

UPSC exam is conducted for selecting Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Forest Service (IFS) and Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers. UPSC exam is of three levels. They are prelims, mains and personality test. Let us discuss in detail about the pattern and syllabus of these exams. IAS Preliminary Exam:

IAS Preliminary exam is the first qualifying round and the mark scored in this is not added to the total score. There are two papers of total 400 marks in this level to test the analytical skill of the candidates and it is compulsory for all the aspirants. The two papers are General Ability test and Civil Service Aptitude Test.  This exam is of objective type and for wrong answer there is negative mark of one-third of mark assigned to that question. It can be written in English or Hindi. There are many All India civil service coaching centres in Chennai. This exam is conducted usually in the month of May or June and the results of it will be published during the month of August. It is an offline mode exam.

The General Ability test has 80 questions and each question carries 2mark and the paper 2 Civil Service Aptitude test contains 100 questions and each question carries 2.5 marks.  Exam duration is two hours for each paper and extra 20 minutes is provided for the blind candidates. If no options are selected for a question then there is no penalty for that question. If multiple options are selected for a question then it is treated as wrong answer and there is negative marking for that question.

Current events, History of India, world and Indian geography, Indian Politics and Power, General Issue, Economics, and General Science are the topics covered in first paper and in second paper the topics covered are comprehension, communication skills, logical reasoning, analytical ability, problem-solving, decision making, general mental ability and basic numeracy. Candidate should score minimum of 33% to clear this level. Only the candidates who clear this level and appear for the main exam.

IAS Main Exam:

IAS main exam is of essay type and there are nine papers in the IAS main exam. There is a change in the pattern of the IAS main exam from 2013. The IAS main exam is to test the level of understanding and the intellectual capability of the candidates. The marks scored in this exam will be added for the total score which will be used in the preparation of ranking list.

In the main exam out of nine paper, two paper is for qualifying and the other seven papers are counted for the merit. The qualifying paper is for 300 marks each. The candidates should select one of Indian language from 8th schedule of constitution for their first qualifying paper and second paper is English. Out of seven papers that are considered for merit two papers are optional and the candidates can select them as they wish from the given choices. Some of the optional subjects are Agriculture, Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Civil Engineering, Geography, Geology, History, Law, Mathematics, management and so on.

The papers are of conventional type and time allocated for each paper is three hours. Candidates can write the exam in any of the languages given by the UPSC. Based on the discretion UPSC can fix the qualifying marks of these papers. Each paper of the main exam carry 250 marks and there is two qualifying paper with every 300 marks. The two qualifying papers are any Indian language and English.

Personality Test / Interview.

It is a part of the main exam with a weight of 275 marks. The score in this round will be added to the IAS main exam score for the total score. There will be a panel of members to interview the candidate based on the career and academic records. This exam will test the mental caliber of the candidates. The qualities that are tested by the panel members of the candidates are the social traits and the current affairs, mental alertness, moral integrity and balance of judgment.

Based on the total score and preferences the candidates will be allotted to the various services.
