Graduation Was Fun, Now What?

Jul 7, 2016 | Students

Graduation funIs it finally over? What to do next? Will I be a success? What if I cannot do it? There are so many questions after graduation. Even those, who were sure about their future, get cold feet from time to time. There is nothing wrong about that, just try to follow some basic tips and you will feel much more confident.

What kind of student were you?

There are three main types of students from the point of view of their attitude. The first type is those who truly believe that college years are the best in their lives. Those are the popular kids that go through college partying. The second group of students says: “Hello! This was a nightmare! I cannot wait when I’m out of this place!” There is a number of reasons for this: lack of friends, nasty teachers, tough subjects, or everything at once. Finally, there are those who like studying. They think that if their performance is good now, there is nothing out there that can stop them from being successful. What’s really funny, all of these types can be successful. Equally, they can all fail. But what is failing?

Is success a lack of failure?

Whatever difficulties you may face after graduation – unemployment, student loans, family and relationships troubles – you WILL fail at something. Unfortunately, this is the truth no one can deny. The main point is not whether you fail (not even how often it happens), but what this experience GIVES to you. A failure, properly taken, will eventually guide you to success. Obviously, being successful has a positive effect on our psychological well-being and overall self-esteem. So, try to tackle small tasks, alongside with major ones, and you will be happier. And, don’t let the failures upset you. Learn from them!

Searching for a (dream) job

A desire to find a job of your dreams seems rather logical. Who wouldn’t like to be paid for doing what they love? The problem is, too many students wait for someone to hand them their dream job on a platter.  Or, they think they will read a job ad, come to the interview, and get it. Hardly ever happens!

How to get it?

If you don’t get a dream job (for obvious reasons), see the previous paragraph. Then, think what you can do to get it.

  • Experience. So, don’t deny other jobs in your field.
  • Knowledge. Presumably, you have some. Even so, you really should learn everything about the field you want to work in.
  • Self-management. Work on it!

New friends… How about the old ones?

Appreciate friends in your life.  All of them. Never try to get estranged from those, who were close to you at college, even if they don’t fit into your life anymore. You never know how an old friend can help you in your future career. Friends can help you get on with your life, comfort you when you are brokenhearted, or give valuable, honest advice. Even if they don’t, there’s no reason to fall out of touch.

Finding your way after the graduation is a hard task. Everything in your life will change – and it’s up to you to make this change a positive one. Stay focused, believe in yourself, and keep going!
